The 1st International Conference for the Theatre of the Hellenic Diaspora organized by the Faculty of Letters, Translation and Communication, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), the MA Program “Greek and World Theatre: Drama, Performance, Education” of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and the Hellenic Institute of Cultural Diplomacy - Belgium. The purpose of the Conference is to study the activity of the theatre of Hellenic Diaspora: theatre troups, performances, theatre plays, authors, directors, actors, Greek theatre tours abroad etc. It covers the period (a) of historical diaspora, (b) economic migration and (c) of modern brain drain. Geographically, it concerns the communities of the Hellenic Diaspora, such as: Konstantinoupolis, Smyrna, Alexandria, Bucharest, Paris, London, New York, Berlin, Brussels etc.
The Conference aims to investigate trends in diasporic theatre activity of the past and present on the following topics: data and phenomena of the Greek diasporic theatre in relation to the history of the modern Greek theatre in metropolitan Greece, theatrical mobility, theatrical networks, Greek theatre troupes “on the move”, Greek-speaking and non-Greek-speaking theatrical activity, mapping of Greek artists of performing arts in the Diaspora, the legacy of diasporic theatrical writing.
The 1st International Conference for the Theatre of the Hellenic Diaspora will take place in 2023 in Brussels in honour of the eight active Greek-speaking theatre groups in Brussels.
